KitchenAid Artisan Mixer: When a Cheap Stand Mixer Will Not Cut It

A good mixer is usually an expensive buy often costing over two hundred dollars. It stands to reason that if you are open to spending that kind of money you'll want to get a model that is going to last for a long time. The KitchenAid Artisan is one of the favorite mixer models around for good reason. The KitchenAid brand was started in 1919 and their 1st product was a mixer. Since then they have continued to create good mixers in addition to a whole slew of other kitchen appliances.

One of the first things I observed with the KitchenAid Artisan was the designing. While functionality is the number one goal of every home appliance it does not hurt to look good either. The glossy metal finish is available in more than twenty colors ranging from simple white to a vibrant pink finish. The mixer weighs in at 25 pounds so it is not very easy to move about. Luckily it looks really nice resting on the countertop.

So clearly the KitchenAid Artisan looks attractive but how does it perform? The stand mixer is capable of almost any chore aside from industrial sized mixing jobs. Homes and restaurants both make use of the KitchenAid Artisan. The 325 watt motor provides enough power to mix almost anything you'll throw at it. The 5 quart mixing bowl is big enough to make big batches.

The stand mixer is versatile with 10 different speeds. On the lower speeds it can slowly mix ingredients and add air to recipes like homemade whipped cream. Higher speeds can mix the thickest dough. Having 10 speeds is truly helpful because you can gradually increase the speed and not make large jumps.

The KitchenAid Artisan will do more than just mix batter and dough. It comes with a wire beater for mixing ingredients that need air such as creams. A bread hook is included as well which is perfect for yeast dough like pizza and bread. There are numerous other attachments that you can buy to do a whole bunch of baking tasks.

Cleanup is often an issue with stand. Adding ingredients may cause splatter. Having too few speeds may also create a mess when you go just a speed too far. This stand mixer addresses this issue by using a pour shield that will keep spattering in check. The attachments, the shield, and the bowl are all removable and are dishwasher safe which speeds up the cleaning process. The base of the machine is pretty easy to wipe down when you are finished.

If you are looking for a reliable, quality mixer I would certainly give the KitchenAid Artisan a chance. While there are surely cheaper alternatives available but the ones that I've tried just do not hold up well over time. It adds up having to re-buy a stand mixer many times. Spending a bit more now will get you a stand mixer that will last you for many years.
